I had a nice chat with Malachy Kilbride from The DC Anti War Network aka D.A.W.N.
Interview with Malachy Kilbride of the DC Anti‑War
Network (7/4/06)
Isis: Okay, go ahead.
Malachy Kilbride:
Okay. I am Malachy Kilbride, , and I’m with the DC Anti‑War Network, DAWN.
Isis: I get e‑mails from you!
MK: Okay.
Isis: Okay, can you tell me about this fast that started yesterday, on
July 3rd. Were you here for all that, too?
MK: I
wasn’t here yesterday, but I began my fast at midnight and so I’m in
to twelve or thirteen hours now. Water only.
And, um, it’s just to show solidarity with, um, all the people here who, uh, are concerned about the war and
bringing an end to the occupation.
Isis: Uh, now are these a couple different groups who are getting together.
I mean, is this basically being run and sponsored by Code Pink?
MK: I
believe it’s, yes, it’s organized by Code Pink and I think Military Families Speak Out and a couple of other groups
and . . .
Isis: Veterans for Peace.
MK: Yeah,
I think Iraq Veterans for . . .
Isis: . . . for Peace.
MK: . . .
and so . . . and there probably are solidarity vigils happening around the country, and I don’t know exactly
how many people they have signed up to participate, but I’m sure they have a fair . . .
Isis: Now, do you think actions like this, there’ve been a couple
sort of actions in the past couple months of different sort of theatre shows to bring attention to the war. Do you believe
that these, these sort of rallies and such, do you think they’re working, they’re bringing awareness outside the
anti‑war movement.
MK: Yeah,
I think so to a degree, especially here in front of the White House. It’s
a great forum. There’re a lot of people from the Washington area, but also
from around the country and around the world, and it is keeping the anti‑war message, the message for peace alive and,
um, and I think a lot of people are impressed to see people out, especially on a day like today in which we could be enjoying
ourselves. We’re here, for this very serious concern.
