On July 3rd, 2006 at about 6pm Code Pink along with Cindy Sheehan and other grassroots activist peace groups had one last meal to kick off their fast to bring the troops home.

Code Pink's Website

It was a beautifully set table on the street of Penn ave right in front of the White House on a long pink runner donned with pink plates , great homemade vegetarian food that was lovingly prepared.

Some people started even before the last meal, some are only drink water, some are taking only liquids.

Each have their own time line and goal.

I had a nice chat with Malachy Kilbride from The DC Anti War Network aka D.A.W.N.

Interview with Malachy Kilbride of the DC Anti‑War Network (7/4/06)

Isis:  Okay, go ahead.

Malachy Kilbride:  Okay. I am Malachy Kilbride, , and I’m with the DC Anti‑War Network, DAWN.

Isis:  I get e‑mails from you!

MK:  Okay.

Isis:  Okay, can you tell me about this fast that started yesterday, on July 3rd.  Were you here for all that, too?

MK:  I wasn’t here yesterday, but I began my fast at midnight and so I’m in to twelve or thirteen hours now.  Water only.  And, um, it’s just to show solidarity with, um, all the people here who, uh, are concerned about the war and bringing an end to the occupation.

Isis:  Uh, now are these a couple different groups who are getting together. I mean, is this basically being run and sponsored by Code Pink?

MK:  I believe it’s, yes, it’s organized by Code Pink and I think Military Families Speak Out and a couple of other groups and . . .

Isis:  Veterans for Peace.

MK:  Yeah, I think Iraq Veterans for . . .

Isis:  . . . for Peace.

MK:  . . . and so . . . and there probably are solidarity vigils happening around the country, and I don’t know exactly how many people they have signed up to participate, but I’m sure they have a fair . . .

Isis:  Now, do you think actions like this, there’ve been a couple sort of actions in the past couple months of different sort of theatre shows to bring attention to the war. Do you believe that these, these sort of rallies and such, do you think they’re working, they’re bringing awareness outside the anti‑war movement.

MK:  Yeah, I think so to a degree, especially here in front of the White House.  It’s a great forum.  There’re a lot of people from the Washington area, but also from around the country and around the world, and it is keeping the anti‑war message, the message for peace alive and, um, and I think a lot of people are impressed to see people out, especially on a day like today in which we could be enjoying ourselves.  We’re here, for this very serious concern.

As of yesterday, July 9th, I got an update in an e-mail about how things are going:

greetings

in lafayette park
under some trees
in front of the white house
some
l0 - 15 brave men and women
have been fasting
(since july 3rd)
to bring the troops home
from
this senseless war

some are engaged in a water only fast
others a fruit juice fast

the fast
does take a toll
on their health and energy
and
as the fast grows longer
and
the heat of the summer saps their strength
your kind words of encouragement and support
will be all they have
as they challenge themselves
and
the powers that be
to end this war

the fasters are in front of the white house
10 am - 7 pm everyday

visit them during your lunch hour
or
after work
or
join them
(there are several thousand fasting around the
country)

they need your support
and
your love
in stopping this war
and
the next one

And it wouldn't be a Code Pink rally without Kristinn Taylor and his merry band of DC Freepers to show their humourous side in opposition.
